I focused on color and as a starting point I had to work with blue and orange markers I wanted to destroy. What became of them was a deep blue water in a wine glass. The reason I went with a wine glass is it being a more complicated shape that bends and distorts the light in a abstractable manner.
After trying a few shots at side angle to the glass and hating the lighting I went top down. This view afforded me more opportunity to play with the illusion of depth. Dark blue draws illusions to deep ocean waters and sadness all of which can be brought back to depth associations. Then to add a unique meaning and flair I brought in a sidelight to add a light gradient of depth and symbolic meaning of having light in the deep darkness.
